ENGLISH FOR YOUNG CHILDREN

The aims of this assignment are twofold: to reinforce early childhood educators understanding of primary concepts and concerns pertaining to emergent literacy in the early childhood education context; and subsequently to create fun, purposeful activities for teaching English to young children. 

This assignment consists of two parts. 

Part 1: (30 marks) 
Read articles in journals, books and the Internet about issues related to emergent literacy in early childhood education. 
Read also Topic 2 Emergent Literacy of your course module HDPS2603 English for Young Children. 
You may begin your essay with an introduction to what emergent literacy means. 
Next discuss the importance of emergent literacy. 
Elaborate the basic components of emergent literacy. 
Include FOUR (4) relevant APA-styled references to provide authoritative support for your discussion. 

Take note that these references will have to be actively used in your discussion before they are later APA-listed and tagged on at the end of Part 1 of the essay. 

Part 2: (30 marks) 

To accelerate language skills and literacy development of young children, there are a host of exciting activities an early childhood educator could use. 


Now choose any TWO (2) of the basic components of emergent literacy you have stated in Part 1 above. 
For EACH component selected, you will need to devise TWO (2) different activities which are fun and purposeful for your kindergarten English class. 

Remember you are NOT required to teach and come up with a full-blown lesson plan for each activity. Rather you are expected to prepare and produce an activity showcasing a clear and thorough description of the what, why and how that particular activity will be carried out to practise the basic component of emergent literacy you have chosen. 

Attach evidences of all FOUR (4) illustrated, detailed activities you have created.
