INDUSTRIAL TOXICOLOGY

In 1978, a leaking toxic dump with over 20,000 tons of chemical waste was discovered buried beneath an elementary school in the working-class residential community of LaSalle in Niagara Falls, New York. The health effects for the residents were staggering, with high incidences of cancer, miscarriages, rare diseases and birth defects. It was the first US state of emergency to be declared over a human-made disaster, and it was a sobering lesson about the effects of toxic pollution. Love Canal received international media attention and stands out as a significant turning point in the history of the global environmental justice movement.

TASK 1 – ESSAY

As a toxicologist at one of the public universities in Malaysia, you are invited to give a speech on the topic “systematic management of toxic waste in Malaysia”. By looking at the lesson which could be learned from the Love Canal tragedy, prepare the content of your speech which should cover the following components:

1. Summary of Love Canal tragedy.

2. Lesson learn from Love Canal tragedy.

3. Detail discussion of ONE similarity between the Love Canal tragedy and ANY toxic waste pollution cases (case study) in Malaysia.

4. Discussion on the harmful characteristics of the chemical (select ONE chemical ONLY) involve in the Love Canal tragedy and the case study selected.

5. Discussion on the proper management of the disposal of toxic waste for both cases.

TASK 2 – ONLINE PARTICIPATION

Discuss in the MyInspire portal (with at least 2 other students) the ‘PCBs, PBBs, Dioxins and Fluorides in the industry and their health effects. Screenshot the whole of your discussion page and attach it to your assignment report file.

TASK 3 – POSTER

You as a freelance Environmental Health and Safety Consultant for one of the waste disposal companies in the Klang Valley have been asked to prepare a poster on the ‘Incinerations and Dioxin’ topic. Prepare an attractive poster to be distributed to the public.

Dalam tahun 1978, kebocoran sisa toksik dengan lebih 20,000 tan sisa kimia telah ditemui tertanam di lapisan bawah sebuah sekolah rendah dalam komuniti perumahan LaSalle di Niagara Falls, New York. Kesan kesihatan yang berlaku terhadap penduduk sangat mengejutkan, dengan bilangan kes kanser yang tinggi, keguguran, penyakit-penyakit ganjil dan kecacatan kelahiran. Ianya merupakan situasi kecemasan pertama di US yang diumumkan terhadap bencana buatan manusia, dan kesan yang dibawa oleh pencemaran toksik ini amat serius dan membimbangkan. Love Canal menerima pelbagai liputan media antarabangsa dan merupakan pencetus kepada sejarah perubahan keadilan persekitaran global.

TUGAS 1 - ESEI

Sebagai ahli toksikologi di sebuah universiti awam di Malaysia, anda dijemput untuk memberikan ceramah berkaitan topik “pengurusan sisa toksik sistematik di Malaysia”. Dengan melihat kepada pengajaran yang boleh di ambil daripada tragedi Love Canal, sediakan isi kandungan ucapan anda yang harus merangkumi komponen-komponen berikut:

1. Rumusan tragedi Love Canal.

2. Pengajaran yang boleh di ambil daripada tragedi Love Canal.

3. Perbincangan teliti tentang SATU persamaan di antara tragedi Love Canal dan MANA-MANA kes pencemaran sisa toksik (kajian kes) di Malaysia.

4. Perbincangan tentang ciri-ciri bahaya bahan kimia (pilih SATU bahan kimia SAHAJA) yang terlibat dalam tragedi Love Canal dan kajian kes yang dipilih.

5. Perbincangan tentang pengurusan yang baik bagi pelupusan sisa toksik untuk kedua-dua kes.

TUGAS 2 – PENYERTAAN DALAM TALIAN

Bincangkan dalam portal MyInspire (bersama sekurang-kurangnya 2 pelajar yang lain) tentang “PCB, PBB, Dioksin dan Fluorida dalam industri dan kesan kesihatannya”. Tangkap layar keseluruhan mukasurat perbincangan anda dan lampirkan ke dalam fail laporan tugasan anda.

Ikuti arahan berikut:

TUGAS 3 – POSTER

Anda sebagai freelance Pegawai Keselamatan dan Kesihatan Persekitaran bagi salah satu syarikat pelupusan sisa di Lembah Klang telah di minta untuk menyediakan poster tentang topik ‘Incinerator dan Dioksin’. Sediakan poster yang menarik untuk di agihkan kepada orang awam.

Tugasan ini sebenarnya kami pernah buat sebelum ini cuma mungkin soalannya diubah-ubah setiap semester. Namun kehendak soalan sebenarnya adalah hampir sama setiap semester.
